A NEW CENTURY OF PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION

DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES, PRACTICES AND POSSIBILITIES

Hosted at Green Acres School

keynote speakers:
Jonathan Kozol

Marian Wright Edelman

A remarkable conference took place in San Francisco in early October, 2007.  Educators from public and private schools, from all over the United States gathered to hear prominent speakers, to share their own expertise, to ask the questions that mattered to them and to visit local progressive schools.  They were inspired by the work of each other and the chance to exchange ideas in an environment that supported and encouraged their efforts to put children, not test scores, at the heart of the educational process.  The conference was hosted by the Progressive Education Network (PEN) the successor organization to the original 1919 Progressive Education Association.

In October, 2009, PEN is again hosting a conference for all educators and those who want to network with like-minded educators to further their knowledge of progressive education practices and philosophy.  With Washington DC as the site for the conference and a new administration in the White House nearby, the PEN conference will celebrate a more dynamic, developmentally appropriate, child-centered approach to teaching and learning.  Keynote speakers will include Jonathan Kozol and Marian Wright Edelman.  There will be visits to local progressive schools and break-out sessions will feature teachers discussing their own teaching practices. The conference goal:  all in attendance will leave the conference knowing that they are working shoulder to shoulder with other thoughtful, creative educators who are making a significant difference in the lives of children.
