True to its progressive roots, Green Acres School has always supported the national Progressive Education Network by attending its conferences and networking with the schools and staff. Started in the late 1980's, the national group sponsored several conference throughout the nation, including Chicago, Illinois; Cambridge, Massachusetts; Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota; Pasadena, California; Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, and San Francisco, California. During this time, Green Acres participated in an active regional progressive educators group. Many different conferences, workshops and seminars were held for teachers, staff and parents. Unfortunately, the national and local group disbanded in the early 90's due to a lack of funding. Prompted by the School at Rose Valley's Progressive Education symposium held in 2005, two events happened. A national steering committee was formed to re-establish a national group and Green Acres staff has embarked on several initiatives to revitalize progressive philosophy within and without our community. Our commitment is to contribute toward the rebirth of the national network. At this time, Green Acres is the only mid-atlantic school represented on the steering committee. Green Acres School is pleased to host the next national Progressive Education conference in October, 2009. Not only will the regional progressive schools be delighted to host the participants, the conference will honor the 75th anniversary of Green Acres School.
